South Sami

South Sámi (Åarjelsaemien gïele)

South Sámi is a Western Sámi language spoken in parts of
Norway and Sweden, particularly in the municipalities of Snåsa and
Hattfjelldal in Norway, by about 600 of the 2,000 of so Southern
Sámi people. South Sámi as two dialects: northern and southern, with
only small differences between them.

The South Sámi orthography currently in use was approved by
the Sámi Language Board in 1976. Only a few books have been published
South Sámi, including South Sámi-Norwegian dictionary.

South Sámi is taught in nursery and primary schools in Snåsa and
Hattfjelldal, and efforts are being made to widen its use.
