Yurok

Yurok (Puliklah)

Yurok is an Algic language spoken by about a dozen elderly people
in Northern California. It was spoken by the Yurok tribe in Del
Norte County and Humboldt County on the far North Coast of California,
but most now speak English. Efforts are underway to revive the language
however.

The name Yurok comes from the Karuk word yúruk, which means
‘downriver’. The Yurok call themselves Puliklah, which means
‘downriver people’. Another name for the language is Weitspekan, and
it is related to Wiyot.
