The ZhongHua Yu Zi (中华语字) was invented by Martin
Luan as an alternative script for Mandarin Chinese. It’s designed to be simple,
logical and flexible, and the name means “Chinese Speaking Character”.

The sound of the consonants are based on BoPoMoFo
and their shapes come from the shape and position of lips and teeth
when the sound are pronounced. The shapes are basic squares and lines to make
them easy to write and read. All similar sounds have more or less the same shape
and can be recognized easily once you know the basic rule.

Notable features

  • The consonants and vowels have totally different shapes so that the reader
can easily distinguish the vowels in the writing.
  • The four tones can be ignored or specified by additional diacritics or other
marks. They are indicated by locations of the vowels and the vowel ends.
  • Consonants are the back bone of each Chinese syllable and vowels and its
end (empty, -n, -ng, -r) are written around the consonants. The vowels are
written in a clockwise direction and are always linked to the consonants.
The vowels are located on the top right, top left, bottom left, bottom
right respectively to show the four tones.
  • The script could theoretical be written in any direction.
  • Used to write: Mandarin Chinese. Could be adapted to write other languages.
  • There are at least three ways to write with this new system: with all
character written separately; with every word connected at the bottom; or
with the whole clause or sentence connected at the bottom.
