Zarma

Zarma (Zarmaciine)

Zarma is a member of the Songhay branch of the Nilo-Saharan language
family. It is spoken by about 2.2 million people in mainly in Niger,
where it is the most widely-spoken indigenous language, and also
in Mali, Benin, Nigeria, Ghana and Burkina Faso.

This languages is also known as Djerma, Dyabarma, Dyarma, Dyerma,
Adzerma, Zabarma, Zarbarma, Zarma, Zarmaci and Zerma.

Notes

  • Doubled vowels are long
  • Nasalised vowels are indicated with a tilde or by a following n or ŋ
  • [ɱ] occurs only before f
  • ɲ is also spelled ny sometimes
