Mikasuki

Mikasuki

Mikasuki is a Muskogean language spoken by about 500
people in southern Florida. The majority of speakers are members of
the Miccosukee tribe, and also by some members of the Seminole tribe.

The language is also know as Muskogee or Miccosukee.

Mikasuki alphabet

Mikasuki alphabet and pronunciation

Mikasuki is a tonal language with three tones. The high tone
is indicated with an acute accent (á, áa), the low tone with a grave
accent (à, àa), and the falling tone with acute and grave accents
(áà) on long vowels, or with the grave accent on the following
consonant for short vowels (áǹ).

Enchewaatke Feshahkeek-omehchot yaal-yakne chokoolekan
hashoote eshtoklan ommomektawa. Okon motoshchahchon yaamek
yakne laapkon apooyoolektawa. Maamehen, Feshahkeek-omehchot
onkakat, “Hayatlehchot eełétesh”, enkakan, hayatlehchokaaye
eełomektawa.

Translation

In the beginning God created heaven and earth. The earth was
formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep water. The spirit
of God was hovering over the water. Then God said, “Let there be
light!” So there was light.
